Kris was born in San Diego, California to Mary Jo "M.J." Campbell & Robert True Houghton, who was an engineer. She has a sister named Karen.
Her parents divorced when Kris was 7 years old. She & Karen were solely raised by their mother until Mary Jo remarried to businessman, Harry Shannon.
Three months after moving to Oxnard, California, Harry's business partner ran off with all the company's money, so the family moved back to San Diego.
